“Pool is Cool” Even When It’s 117 Degrees Outside!
Author: TheNavigator

NS and CP power has been showing up on the point of some BNSF westbounds recently, but yesterday afternoon a veritable parade of foreign power occurred on the Needles Sub.  The high temp did indeed hit 117 degrees in this area of the Mojave Desert (according to my car thermometer), and I suppose saying run-through power rather than “pool” power is more accurate, but it’s not as catchy.  Thanks as always for the heads up and location reports!

Thanks for looking,
GK

1.  New NS 4201 leads an LA-bound stack train west at Lavic.

2.  The mid-train DPUs were also of the NS variety.

3.  Following NS 4201 was NS 4453, another new AC44C6M DC to AC unit, also at Lavic.

Few more to follow.

4.  At Siberia, where the temperature fittingly plummeted to 114, this grain train led by CP 8152 is headed to Modesto.

5.  Same location as #4, but shorter focal length.

6.  One more shot of the CP train, between Siberia and Ash Hill.  We were unable to shoot the usual photo location at Ash Hill account being blocked by a couple cuts of hoppers.  Pisgah was likewise blocked by a cut of well cars and autoracks.

7.  NS 4478, yet another AC44C6M, was the third NS leader this afternoon on a QNYCLAC at Siberia.

8.   Same location at Siberia with a shorter focal length.

9.  Rolling roster of 4478.

10.  One more time for 4478, at Ludlow.

11.  Out of chronological order, this shot of BNSF 3902 on a westbound was actually my first shot of the day, taken as I pulled off the bouncy dirt road enroute from Pisgah to Lavic.

Great catches, thank you for sharing.

What is BNSF to do with all of those extra AC traction motors per unit! :-o

So great stuff. Nice daytime shots and it's been a bit warm, light sweater weather. Doesn't it look great, thought of
being able to run the 4478, just blowing along on it's run? Fast forward to lkast night when the poor 4478 was almost
in tears wanting to get into Barstow! The poor Router was almost down to taking numbers! The Needles Helpers
turned at Troy to get back to Needles after shoving that whole distance. It was anbout 3 hours from Ash Hill to the
yard. The thrill of modern railroading.

Quck PS  It's 118 now, probably 119 in Needles, 118 tomorrow if you need a little more

Thanks, but are you saying that the NS 4478 train had the Needles helpers on it?  If so, then they were well concealed inasmuch as they were not in evidence at either Siberia or Ludlow, both of which are east of Troy where they would have presumably been cut off prior to Barstow.

They were fine running in the desert. The light there is better in black. On the west coast there is a lot of green and they are lifeless. There, in the desert, it highlighted them too much.

No Gary, the Needles Helpers were on another train. The DS was trying to find a spot to get them off before entering the
Barstow traffic jam. The "double" trains are getting cut at Daggett and until they ger a crew out to pick up the back half it
makes things erven worse. So your efforts at getting out a ways really yield rewards at the current traffic levels, high temps
or not. There was even a setout from the East of empty containers at Cadiz for the A&C to pick up and deliver tp Rose
Acres. The power was interesting, all the train moves even more so.
