Western Railroad Discussion > Cantara Loop Derailment Clean up - Far Northern CaliforniaDate: 09/13/21 09:39 Cantara Loop Derailment Clean up - Far Northern California Author: TCnR One of the neighbors happened across the results of UPrr's derailment on Catara Loop from August 27. Speculation is the placement of empty autorack cars in the middle of loads and the physical restrictions of Cantara Loop caused the sequence of events resulting in the derailment, as suggested by the photos in the linked TO posts. Here's the effect on the freight cars, this could also fit with the Mishap Monday theme on the N&H page.
We surmise the cars are being cut up using a hydraulic shear on an excavator and then loaded into large off road dump trucks, driven up the very steep and narrow County road to a transload next to a nearby grade crossing, to be loaded into hiway legal scrap trucks or maybe scrap gons, who knows? There's a few Videos on YT showing how they work in a scrap yard or for demo work.
This was offloaded during the Sims bridge incident a few years ago but was never used, they had to offload equipment in a number of places due to access. The bridge was repaired quickly with fabricated parts, don't remember what they did with the freight cars that time. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/13/21 12:12 by TCnR.
