SP power on local in Portland
Author: gobbl3gook

I came across Ex SP - UP 1124 switching in Portland yesterday.  25 years and 15 days post merger.  Pretty impressive!  If WP locomotives lasted that long, that would be like seeing a WP GP in 2007!

Even more impressive with the SP letters still on the nose.

MK rebuild?  Very good paint.

1) and 2), NE 11th Ave at golden hour.
3) switching Nabisco, 3:00 pm

Same locomotive, Dec 7 2020.  Similar locations.

BTW, why can't the TO software correctly accept data from my iPhone on which way is "up" on photos?  Seems this should be a pretty basic desirable feature...

Someone (thankfully) took the decal off the nose.   It isnt like the UP just let that get by.

Info in rrpicturearchives.net indicate this was the last SP GP60 (the former SP 9721) to be patched into UP numbers.   Photos online seem to indicate it never received a UP shield on the nose and the SP was left in place from it's as delivered appearance.   I presume that means it's wearing it's original 1991 EMD production line provided SP paint which has held up very well during that 30 years.

And it's a GP60 so it ain't no MK rebuild. You're thinking GP40's.

Nice -- the ex-Kennecott / MKT-rebuilt GP39-2 is not a bad catch either. Not exactly tons of those in the world... ten at most...

Yes, as good or more interesting than the "correct" orientation.

In your first photo from Dec. 7 2020, the warehouse on the right used to be the Lincoln Electric warehouse.  My dad worked there and on some Saturdays when he had to work, I would go with him.  He would unload boxcars spotted at what is now the closed up door in that photo.  On the Saturdays when I accompainied him to work and there was no boxcar spotted there, he would open the door so I could watch the trains.  This was back in the late '60s/early '70s when I was pre-school to early grade school age.  Thanks for posting these photos and bringing back these memories.

Truly a treasure to behold!   It's amazing how good the paint has held up over time.   I do see some areas that have been touched up, but that's okay.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi All,

I'm glad you liked the photos!

I flipped the two upside down ones, for comparison.

And yes, it's a GP60, so not an MK rebuild.  thanks for the info on the manufacturing date -- looks pretty good for 30.

FiestaFoamer -- the UP unit is ex-Kennecott/Ex MKT?  Interesting.  https://utahrails.net/bingham/kcc-utah-locos.php search page for 1207

Willsburg -- fun to learn about your old haunts.  What do you remember about the passing trains?  In the early 1970s I was a little kid, we would look for GN and Burlington cabooses on BN trains going past my grandparent house in Alma, WI.

latinboy -- glad you like the Mt. Hood photo -- it had one of those cute "cap clouds"  Too bad I didn't have a better camera.

Thank you for posting a nice series of images.
She still looks pretty good after 30 years, as she was built in April 1991. Here she is at 4 1/2 years old behind sister SP 9610 as they bring a beet train off of the Valley subdivision waiting for a crew change in Roseville on October 2, 1995 at 7:30 a.m.
