Predicting any weather a week away and expecting it to be a reliable forecast is nonsense.  The state of the art isn't there yet.  You might as well flip a coin.

But look at all the increased viewer and listener ratings, advertisements, and marketing you can get, make, and do in the meantime!!

The "Western United States" is a very large area.  So all of California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Colorado,Wyoming, New Mexico, and Arizona will be getting a major snow storm?

I'm sure that they are all really hoping so, what with the extreme drought the last many years.

Well, first you must give the storm a name! :-)

I'm sure many fire fighters and residents of fire zones would welcome a foot of snow.

NOAA is moving towards La Nina this time, haven't really decided what that means for me. Here's a link to a past conditions table that should show a comparable year, I always compare to the 64/65 storms that hit the Cascade route and also the NWP. In general the storms go further north depending on the Ocean temps, or something like that:

Here's their discussion:

This storm is originating off Japan and is currently a typhoon as of now. the storm like many in the western Atlantic head north then east. once around Alaska,  It shows a big dip in the jet stream along the west coast next weekend bring in the weather.

A strong La Niña event almost always means a dry winter for the SW United States, an area already in serious drought.  It also usually means a wet winter in the Pacific Northwest and the Northern Rockies.  What is tricky to predict is both the strength and the longevity of a La Niña event.  An area that can be strongly affected one way or another by the strength of a La Niña event runs from the Pacific Coast eastward to about the Front Range of the Rockies between the latitude of about 40° to 42° North--in the Rockies, for example, from about central Colorado through central Wyoming.  That "strip" can fall between the drier weather pattern to the south or the wetter pattern to the north, depending on the strength of the La Niña event.

The various winter forecasts that I've seen from both government and private meteorological sources indicate that this may be a complicated winter weather year for the U.S.  Most agree on a significant La Niña event, and, in the rest of the country  a prediction of average to above average precipitation over much of the central and northeastern states.  Much of the central part of the country looks to be colder than normal.  We'll see if those forecasts pan out.

One final note: typically, the onset of a major early winter storm in most of the West is not necessarily a harbinger of a brutal winter ahead.  Similarly, a long, warm, dry fall does not necessarily portend a mild winter.  In my experience of living in the Rockies over several decades, some long, mild autumns were sometimes followed by brutally long, cold winters.

Many more factors involved than just La Nina. La Nina doesn't guarantee a dry winter in CA, just like El Nino doesn't guarantee a wet winter. The MJO (Madden-Julian Oscillation) and the Arctic Oscillation are factors. The have been cases when the AO, in a persistent strong negative phase, cancels out an La Nina. It depends where the long wave through sets up.

The La Nina does not look all that strong and there are indications it will be gone by January.

Another thing to watch for: if Siberia experiences a colder October than normal (with periods of snow) it's an indicator of an strong/active west to east polar jet stream, which would be a good thing for California.

According to the European weather model the central Rockies will have a significant winter type storm on 10/9, 10/10 and 10/11.

Looking at that attached matrix it's pretty obvious that not every winter is the same.

Good info about the Artic conditions, have to check it out.
