UP piled one up at Hammett, ID this morning
Author: funnelfan

A mixed train piled up on the double track outside of Hammett, ID this morning. This is on the descent into the Snake River Valley south of Boise, MP 384. Photos show autoracks, bulkhead flats with plate steel, Hi-Cube boxcars, grain hoppers, loaded and empty centerbeams, coil steel cars, and some flatcars. Big mess, much of which tumbled down the fill the track is on.

Update; Train was the MPDNP with 205 cars and just shy of 15,000'. 28 cars derailed. The derailed cars were only about 8 cars ahead of the mid-train DPU locomotive. The derailment was right at the bottom of the 3.5 mile long grade.

UP seems to be having more and more big derailments like this, after laying off essential employees that maintain the system.  And, they're scrapping crane derricks down here in Roseville, as if derailments don't happen any more.  Most of those cars were carrying high value freight (autos, steel, lumber, etc.) so that's not good for customer service or relations, nor for UP's bottom line.

Cut train lengths in half and watch the pileups decrease.  Tracks still have to be maintained per FRA rules.

Irregardless of if it was U. P. or another railroad, OR even some other type company nowdays with the you mis managers who know everything and for them it is all electronic and cool - they will continue doing what they are doing  no matter what because they worked it out on paper and it says success. The results be damned, this is the new way.
You know, . . . . just like socialism/communism - never worked before but they scream " we know but WE are going to do it right this time."

                          Happy days believers.

I'd love to see the FRA's statistics regarding derailments based on ton-miles as compared to train-miles, over time, to get a sense of whether longer trains really result in more (or more serious) derailments.  We all love the anecdotes, but are there real statistics that tell the story?

Oh jeez...Train derailments are caused by socialism, which is the same as communism.    Just because u believe in fairy tales, doesnt make them true.

So how does the accident rate for American railroads compare to the Russian railways?

In the last image they have started to right the boxcar and bulkhead flatcar that were at the head of the derailed cars.

Cranes like that are basically obselete to a Class 1.  Derailment contractors with vastly more versatile equipment get called first.

Instead of the UP slogan "Building America", how about changing it to destroying America, one carload at a time.
