Western Railroad Discussion > Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ?Date: 01/04/22 07:07 Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ? Author: gcm Anyone see last Sundays episode of S.W.A.T. ?
While running around an old western town set chasing bad guys, they passed a few passenger cars. Here is a screen grab of a set that looked like SP articulated coaches. Anyone know where this might have been filmed and maybe an ID on the other cars. Gary Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 01/04/22 07:08 by gcm. Date: 01/04/22 07:18 Re: Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ? Author: Topfuel Those cars were bought from Amtrak circa 1977 - pretty early. They are at one of the old Hollywood "movie ranches" in the hills near Saugus, CA. Cars should be still there, but there is a chance some of them were damaged in one of the So CA fires a few years ago. You used to be able to see them from a two lane road, but now I think with tree growth you really have to know where to look in order to see them

Gary Date: 01/04/22 12:06 Re: Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ? Author: mundo Amtrak purchased many of these former SP pre-war as "Emergency" equipment.
Reported price was $700.00 a car They lasted several years. Could be found on the early San Joaquins, set out cars at Sparks/Reno on the train # 5-6, Reno Fun Trains Date: 01/04/22 12:12 Re: Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ? Author: Sp1110 Why does Amtrak prefer stainless steel cars?

I thought Frank's ranch was a different location; I do not remember tracks in the vicinity, but I'll admit I did not wander every last acre of it. https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,4163499,4163518#4163518 Had no idea these were still around. Date: 01/05/22 16:22 Re: Ex-SP articulated cars on S.W.A.T. ? Author: Laurence I took these 2 today while at work. They are indeed ex Amtrak cars , and the two are articulated and connected with one truck as the picture shows. These cars have been out here for at least 20 plus years. I work in film and tv in LA and have worked on a few projects over the years at Sable Ranch and they have always been there. They have probably been used numerous times over the years as static background.

As I noted in my comments above, I believe these cars have been there since about 1978 - over 40 years. There are currently 6 cars (counting the artics as 2 cars), but originally there were 9 as I recall. The artics are former Amtrak 7521 and 7522 , ex-SP 2416 and 2417, P-S 1937.
