Westbound coal and a Cotton Belt survivor in Central Texas...
Author: atx_railfan

Went out to Flatonia, TX yesterday, but the tracks were pretty dead. The first train we saw after around an hour there was a coal train behind an SD70ACe-T4, which we west on the Glidden Sub.

1) UP 3077 leads a loaded coal train through Waelder, TX on the Glidden Sub.

2) UP 3077 leads the train past Harwood, TX.

3) The coal loads crawl through Luling

4) Crossing a bridge outside of Kingsbury, TX

5) Pulling into the siding in Kingsbury

6) After a swing through San Antonio, we headed home towards Austin. On the way, we stopped in New Braunfels to photograph one of the last scarlet and grey units on the UP roster, ex-Cotton Belt GP60 #1055. This unit is used as local power out of New Braunfels.

7+8) A couple more views of 1055, conveniently spotted just over the fence from a public parking lot.

Thanks for viewing!

I really like the first shot and the bridge shot of T4!  I really like those units.  Been trying to catch one in Caldwell but have had no luck.

An excellent photo series showing two quite different aspects of railroading.
Photos of #3077 on the coal tran are all superb; #3077 looks great..
Photos of #1055 are all interesting and well composerd.
Thanks for your remarkable photo posting.

I've seen them here and there in Austin, but this was the first one I'd ever seen leading. Friend of mine is a UP engineer and loves them. Apparently it's a very smooth and quiet ride compared to the GEs.

I operate the 1075 at Kaiser yd, CA. But it's painted yellow. Urp. I'd take the patch job.
