According to the article, the car took Highway 12.

I'm impressed it managed to hit 50mph without derailing.   The last time I was on that stretch of Highway 12 (admittedly several years ago) the track didn't look particularly robust.

Is it too soon to suggest this was actually an undisclosed test of the new autonomous rail car concept?

Looks like it has an EOT on it at least!   Guessing it was the rear car of a local train that cut off on the main, and the crew forgot to tie a hand brake?

Where is the "Like" button.  Funny thing is I had the same thoughts when watching the autonomous rail car video.  It seems like a realistic parrallel.

Correct, Columbia-Walla Walla Railway leases the Wallula to Walla Walla line, the first 3.7 miles east of Wallula from BNSF and the rest of the line from UP.

Another video of the run away tankcar. Annoying music though.
