End and start Of The Week On The BNSF--A Bit Of Traction--777
Author: Ritzville

It was another sunny Spring type day in Ritzville, WA on the BNSF Lakeside Sub on the Northern Transcon. The high-low was 58-34, Possible rain on the way. Traffic is at 24 trains since midnight with more on the way. MoW seems to be stuck in the backyard making it difficult for pictures. Here are some trains from today and yesterday with a bit of Traction.

2. WB 319pm grain train with BNSF 7313-4119 on the pull with DPU's.

Now for a bit of Traction from the Andy Goddard collection.

19. Pacific Electric MTA car 498 on a Charter run in the 1950's. Need location help Charlie.
20. PE MTA 498 at Wingfoot Freight Station in 1950's. Maybe same Charter run. Where is Wingfoot Charlie?
20. Key System streetcar 948 in Oakland in 1947. Not sure what line car is working.

That's it for today. Hope everyone has a great evening and tomorrow. Thank you so much for looking!

Find a green BN hopper without graffiti is difficult. If you could find two of them, you are a lucky guy and could win the lottery pool.

Wow!... photos 19 & 20 are indeed rare. So rare, it looks like one of the crew brought his camera to record the event.

Wingfoot was, in modern terms, an industrial park built by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co, (the name is derived from Goodyear's corporate symbol; the winged foot)
between 1919-1920. The complex included housing tract, "Goodyear Gardens" for tire company workers. Over time other shippers located in the area.
Goodyear operations continued until about 1980 on the 74 acre site which was served in alternating periods (I believe years, but others here may correct me),
by both Pacific Electric and Santa Fe. PE's connection, south of Gage Ave on their "four-tracks" extended about .75 miles west to the corner of Central Ave & Gage where
we see combo 498 parked. I have to believe Santa Fe crews gained access to Wingfoot via their Harbor District which ran parallel along Slauson Ave, to the north. If you Google the area, an aerial view shows many
of the curved leads which are telltales for railroad tracks...apparently all removed. In my brief PE career Santa Fe was the operator on the line and I never saw it for myself.

The line was built in by PE ancestor Los Angeles Inter-Urban Ry in 1904 to serve Ascot Park, which closed in 1908 and I assume never hauled a paying passenger while under “New” PE ownership after 1911.

It was fun to see Wingfoot, I have made a couple of track inspections there on motor cars with Rudy Widmann, the SP Division Engineer.
Rudy worked in the PE Engineering Dept. before being transferred to the SP and  he had a lot of tales about working the various PE lines during and after WWII before the massive bus conversion.

Key System train looks to be at 13th and Broadway; train is on 13th and is just crossing Broadway.  McNutt's Hats was near the corner, and Google Earth Street View shows the same building today on the corner.  Based on Street View, the train is going the wrong way on a one way street....per today's traffic flow!  LOL.

Cool traction photos, Larry.  Being a native born Bay Area-ite, with grandparents in Albany/Berkeley area, I am fascinated by anything that was once in that area.  Unfortunately, I was just getting old enough to be aware of trains when they were tearing everything out.  But I can remember my folks driving through the old Key System tunnel in Berkeley - Solano Ave., I think?
