------------------------------------------------------- > Highway traffic bridge, on the right? > > W. > > When the bridge was opened in 1930, and until the late 1990s, there was a two lane concrete roadway on the north side of the railroad (camera right) that carried US Route 80 until opening of the four lane Interstate 20 Bridge, just out of sight (camera left) and south of the bridge in the image. The roadway concrete panels are supported by cantilever beams connected to the railroad support beams. Over the years, deterioration of the concrete panels made the roadway unsuitable for continuous highway traffic. With the bulk of the traffic traveling Interstate 20, Warren County Mississippi, the bridge owner, decided to close the roadway to traffic. The lanes are still used for hourly patrols and opened to the public for walking and running events several times yearly. There is an initiative to open the roadway lanes to pedestrians for walking and cycling, but safety concerns by KCS have all but halted this initiative. I hope this helps.
