Rolling Into Summer On The BNSF, Warmer Temps-A Bit Of Traction
Author: Ritzville

It was a sunny to partly cloudy warmish day in Ritzville, WA on the BNSF Lakeside Sub on the Northern Transcon. The high-low was 86-56 so far, 90 degree temps on the way for weekend. It did stay cool and drippy until the first day of Summer, then the 80's hit the area. Traffic is at 19 trains since midnight with more on the way. Here is some action from Monday and Tuesday. and a bit of Traction.

Picture 19 has dual gauge track (PE and LARY) and some actual cantenary instead of the usual trolley wire. Designed for heavy duty use!

The 1495 was converted from an 800 class wooden car.  Sister car 1498, also converted from an 800, exists at Travel Town in Los Angeles.

Wow!  These old traction and coach photos are amazing!  Thanks for sharing them.  The Twin Coach (former Asbury Transit Lines now in MTA colors) is passing Crown City Lumber and Mill on west Green Street in Pasadena, California crossing the UPRR Pasadena Branch.  My Mom (who never leared how to drive) used to take me on this bus route over to Eagle Rock via Colorado Blvd.  We'd get off and catch an LARY streetcar (don't remember the line identity) that took us to Lincoln Park on the northeast side of Los Angeles where, if I had been a good kid, we'd rent a peddle boat and peddle around the lake at that location.

Larry:  I think that Crown City Lumber and Mill facility behind the Asbury Transit bus was in Pasadena, not sure of the address.

No 19 is on San Pedro St, looking north, between 8th and 7th Sts. The Red car will make a left turn about
one block further, to begin its climb onto the viaduct at the rear of the PE building.

No 20 shows us one of the five 800 class coaches that were rebuilt into express cars in 1940; only to be returned
to their passenger duties in shop train service, bearing their original numbers--in this case 826, for the 'duration'.
The return was short lived and once again 826 and her four sisters were returned to express car service resuming
their 1495 class numbers. The 1495 was scrapped in 1949 while the 1498 was donated to Los Angeles' TravelTown
As to location of this photo, somehow this has a certain Torrance 'feel'. Maybe 3rdswitch can help on this---Torrance is
his home turf.

Ritzville Action
Looks like summer started off with variable sky conditions.  Especially like the sky conditions in Photos 8 - 12.
Real variety of traffic.  Especially noted the FEDEX trailers and the MRL boxcars.

Historic Traction
19 - Classic Interurban street running scene.  Light color auto on the left is a 1958 Pontiac with some wear.
Coincidently, dark color auto on the right is a 1948 Pontiac.  1960 date appears appropriate.
22 -  MTA Twin Coach  is an interesting model we have previously discussed.
Only operator of Twin Coach busses in my home area of Louisville, KY was Bridge Transit.  This line
operated Louisville, KY - Jeffersonville, IN service with a small fleet of Twin Coach and GM Old Look busses.
They replaced their Twin Coach busses with GM New Look busses about 1960/61.
This line only accomodated interstate passengers.
23 -  Bus #116 is a GM Old Look; have never seen one that I do not like,

Really appreciate the quality of your postings and all the work that goes into producing them.
