UP's Instantenous Bridge Replacement Program, Hampton, IA
Author: funnelfan

UP continues it's bridge replacement lottery, this time Hampton, IA was selected just this morning around 3:30am when 44 cars derailed over Otter Creek. Several asphalt cars landed in the creek and ruptured spilling the substance into the creek. Crew was not hurt as the locomotives made it past the bridge before the train derailed.

If I understand correctly and if im wrong please correct me this was the MALNP train which often run's very long 12,000 feet of junk train.

Add that and defered maintenance and inspections and you get weekends full of derailments.

For the less informed among us, a couple of definitions please...

  Leader program?

  Junk train?  Is this anything other than a unit train?

Junk = manifest freight train

LEADER = Locomotive Engineer Assist / Display and Event Recorder (somewhat analogous to auto pilot on an airplane)
