Another load of American Crystal Sugar-bound coal via BNSF today
Author: jmulhol2

A 2x1 westbound (geographically northbound), 6,800+ foot-long, 18,000+ ton, 129-car loaded "SUGX" unit coal train bound for Ardoch, ND (coal transload facility) is seen here passing around MP00.35 on BNSF's Glasston Subdivision in Grand Forks, ND during the early afternoon hours of 09/12/2022. This train will terminate at the loop track in Ardoch, ND for unloading into a pit which is then transported via conveyor belts to be piled high for storage. From there, this coal will be loaded onto and transported by Holland M-Bar-D trucks to the 5 different American Crystal Sugar factories up/down the Red River Valley for burning and power output throughout the winter. TheĀ 5 different American Crystal Sugar factories are (from south-to-north): Moorhead, MN - Hillsboro, ND - Crookston, MN - East Grand Forks, MN - Drayton, ND. This train typically returns every 5-7 days with a fresh load of coal, usually from Spring Creek Mine, MT.

Why are five plants better than one or two?

Beet are perishable. Red River Valley grows a lot of beets and they need 5 plants to process them within a window of 4 months. Although the picked beets are stored indoors during the frigid months, they will only last a couple months
