Warbonnet Wednesday ~ BNSF 600/700/4700 Series C44-9Ws in So Cal
Author: MrMRL

Been a few months since I authored one of these. But once again, I've had the opportunity over the past few weeks to capture (and now share with everyone) some of the few remaining active ATSF and early BNSF era Red & Silver "Warbonnet" painted C44-9Ws (DASH 9-44CW) that still occasionally roam through Southern California. All the examples below were manufactured by General Electric in Erie, PA in the mid to late 1990s.

1.) BNSF/ATSF 637 - Hobart Yard, Los Angeles, CA 11/19/22, built Feb. 1994.
2.) BNSF/ATSF 643 - Commerce, CA on 11/17/22, built March 1994.
3.) BNSF 753 - Commerce, CA on 11/25/22, built August 1997.

Can folks believe that the merger between Burlington Northern RR and the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railway occurred over 27 years ago??? What were you doing in Sept 1995? I was 10, starting the 5th grade, hating math and homework in general, enjoying The X-Files on FOX most friday nights, and playing with Legos and K'Nex plastic toys late into the evenings.

4.) BNSF 761 - Hobart Yard, Los Angeles, CA on 11/19/22 , built August 1997.
5.) BNSF 4701 & 778 -  Commerce, CA on 11/20/22, built Oct. and Sept. 1997.
6.) BNSF 4711 - Commerce, CA 10/11/22, built Nov. 1997.

Can’t believe how good some of those units still look. Great series.

As for what I was doing when the merger was announced: disappointed in the news after having chased the ATSF Stockton sub between Antioch and Richmond on my days off that summer while home from college. Sure glad I got the chance to do that before it all changed.

Good stuff, Robbie, thanks for posting.  Loved the "ATSF" chalked on the nose of 4711!  As for what I was donig in September 1995, I was the ovrnight dj on a Cedar Rapids radio station, a position I would hold for another 7 years.

Another nice one JB, you gave us two Warbonnet scenes from Missouri today! Here's a repost of what I was doing in Sept. '95: One last hurrah on my beloved Clovis Sub before the end... JG

Out shooting on the Needles sub around Ash Hill when the merger of the parent companies took place and the dispatcher announced BBSF over the radio

Awesome Warbonnet Wednesday. If only the paint on the 600's held up like the 700 and 4700 series units! Nice to see the 637 and the 4701 dont have a storage stack covers yet.
