Western Railroad Discussion > Generator on UP at Point of Rocks, NE, 23 Jan 2023

Union Pacific 2578, ET45AH, moved a generator on KWUX 301 past Point of Rocks east of Potter, Nebraska, 23 January 2023 on UP's Sidney Subdivision.  Caboose is lettered Fracht LBR 551974.  Cold gray day with surprising amount of snow on the ground.

NO sound video.

What is the weight of the generator ?

Is that an active caboose used for special purposes ?

The caboose houses the crew that is with the train. They are able to adjust the load to get around close objects, such as moving side to side by a number of inches. 

Caboose used by three Schnabel Car operators; generator weighs between 500-550 tons?

I'm going to show my ignorance here, but how do these massive "generators" work?  Is there a rotating conductor in a magnetic field which is powered by an external power source, or is it really a "transformer," or maybe something else.

Yes, that is a generator head for lack of a better term and is connected to a source to turn the shaft.
