Some kinda serious derail, eh?
Author: santafe199

Looks like Uncle Pete is adamant about keeping stray movements off of his main track...

1. UP yard scene in Salina, KS on February 11, 2023. Nothing like sun glint on burnished steel rails to bring out the detail...

“Lined & locked in the derailing position”!

Switchpoint derails not at all uncommon....

Hmm, I just thought that was the lead to yard track zero, one of the shorter ones.

That is what it takes to derail to the inside of a curve.  They cannot install a derail to the outside of the curve because that is where another track is.

Just don't show that to NS

No problem. It's cheaper to derail them without spending on special trackwork.

Some spurs may have a "double derail". The common one keeps errant cars on the spur from venturing onto the main. And a derail going into the spur, in case vandals break the lock and line a mainline train into the spur. Some propane tank car spurs have this arrangement.

Train coming from the other direction would be like "Hold my beer!".

It could be done as in Europe and have a switch lined for a 20ft dead-end section and call that a derail.
