Thanks for sharing.

I haven't seen the CofG heritage locomotive yet here in its home territory.

Growing up, the Central of Georgia was my main railroad and I remember that paint scheme well. The Southern had a lot more trains, but it ran on the other side of town.

I had to be content with a slow CofG drag across the foot of the main street in town with a bridge on either side. My parent did not like it, but I enjoyed the whole, drawn out affair.

great memories.

i'm looking at a n.s. southern map and have a question: was macon originally the c.o.g.'s yard or was it the southern's?

it sure looked like the "central of georgia" was appropriately named............

Interesting comment.  I've gotten it twice.  Once south of Galesburg, IL, leading a BNSF coal drag and thought I  was lucky to get it then.  The second time, it was trailing on a UP manifest in Rosenburg, TX.

Thanks for posting, 66.

The hump yard was built right after Southern took over the Central of Georgia. I'm not that familiar with Macon, but I think the land used mostly came from the Southern.

interesting and thanks for the info.

looking at my n.s. map and all of its predecessors, i can sure see why the n.s. wanted the c.o.g. and that hump yard at macon........

Actually, CEO Brosnan did not want it but believed that the ICC was forcing it on the Southern.

He was brutal toward the CofGA employees.

However IMO the combination made the Southern a much stronger railroad, just as you view the merged network.

Well, whatever one may think about the location, that's the most photographer-friendly fence I ever saw - all below the railhead.
