UP 96 Takes a Spin on Cheyenne Turntable
Author: cozephyr

The UP's Steam Shop SW-10 96 took "water bottle" UPP 814 for a spin on the Cheyenne, WY, turntable April 1, 2005. The 96, was rebuilt from SW7 1821 Nov 30, 1982 emerging as UP 1243. It's the only SW-10 in UP's heritage fleet. None are left switching UP yards. Unit is rated 1,200-horsepower.

Reference Union Pacific Locomotive Directory 2003-2004 by Paul K. Withers. Appendix B - Heritage Fleet, page 173. EMD/UP SW10 1 unit.

"In use as the "shop switcher" at the Cheyenne heritage complex is the SW-10 No. 1234. A historically interesting engine in its own right, it was built in 1951."

UP SW10 1234 became Coast Rail Services (CRSX) 1234.

Nope, 1243 is correct:

If I'm not mistaken, 1243 is the number of the little steam switcher at the Western Heritage Museum in Omaha. I was under the impression that the diesel was numbered the same in honour of it. Don't ask me where I heard that. I might just be making an assumption on a coincidence!

Interesting horn on the UP for a switcher. It appars to be a P-5 which would of been placed there by someone who appreciates sound. Perhaps a shop worker.

I guess some one needs to correct the UPRR website about that engine number.

If I squeeze my brain harder, I think I remember 1243, the steamer, making a cameo appearance in one of the Last of the Giants tapes. They were burning a tire in the smokebox and were pushing it along for the movie. I think 1243 was the yard switcher for Cheyenne.

1243 was never the yard switcher in Cheyenne.
It ran the mixed from Walcott down to Encampment, Wyoming, on the former Saratoga and Encampment Valley. After 1955, it showed up in Cheyenne, but aside from a little film work for UP publicity never ran again.
