Steam & Excursion > A Random Visit to Niles CanyonDate: 03/25/06 16:35 A Random Visit to Niles Canyon Author: samreeves Here is a sampling of what I saw at the Niles Canyon Railway last Sunday. Every once in a while you have to put the hardcore foaming on the backburner and go for a ride! First a close up view of Western Pacific GP7 713's real life weathering job. Second, a full frontal of the geep's high nose at Sunol. And third, some Harriman style accomidations anyone could love.

There must be a SP depot nearby? I guess the NCRY's ticket shed in Niles will have to do. After picking up passengers, the train heads back into the green hills. At Brightside we see some eye candy, namely the best looking of all of the WP f-units.

This neat looking SP switcher hauled the train back. It was the first time in a long time which I've heard SP's horn of choice too. UP has pretty much stamped out any P3 style horns. It was also neat to listen to this switcher idle with its "ratta tatta tatta tatta." A very pleasant journey even if it was only about several miles!

Your recent images are great, thanks.

To our surprise we caught the PLA doing test runs w/ steamer Quincy #2. She looked great pulling a wood reefer and ex-Santa Fe hack in the cool March air.
