Durango & Silverton Vows Not To Get Burned Again

An article on the Durango & Silverton's summer fire prevention program can be found at www.durangoherald.com on April 21 2006. The San Juans are still about only 60% or so of normal snowpack but this winter is way ahead of the wlnter of 2001-2002. Assuming that the monsoon rains show up on schedule I hope that we will be able to avoid any disastrous fires.

With the price of gas this summer ($3.19 in California), dry weather may not be all ofthe problems the tourist industry has to contend with.

Could drought conditions curtail steam operations on the D&SNG this summer? A few years ago, E & P #4 was not allowed to operate for Railfest. I sure hope that won't happen again.

Maybe. Sometimes high gas prices scoop up people who would have gone farther away. An effective ad compaign, and perhaps bus serice from Albuquerque Airport that people can take, may boost business.

Some of us have been distributing brochures all around the country, including homemade fliers to get the word out for the D&S's Sister railroad the C&TS...
