We Still Are Saving The McCloud...One Piece At A Time!
Author: LoggerHogger

I posted this a while ago. We are saving still more pieces of the McCloud.

Yes, the McCloud is largely gone and we all miss it. I was able to sell the #18 to the Virginia & Truckee RR Commission a couple years ago and the #25 to the Oregon Coast Scenic Ry this year. Both are in operation and still in their historic McCloud River Railroad lettering.

Well, the McCloud story is not over. This week, the hardware from the Hooper and Bartle tanks on the McCloud was retrieved by our crews on the OCSR for restoration on the expanded operation out of Garibaldi, OR. This hardware will be used to rebuild the tanks on the OCSR and they will allow the #25 to get water on her trips there for years in the future just as she did in McCloud.

This was the first step in preserving more of the McCloud Ry that we have planned.

More to follow.

Martin

Where on the OCSR will the tank(s) be located? Sounds like a great plan.

It's really hard to believe the McCloud RR is gone (east of McCloud). The town, the trains, the trees, the history--once so great, now so sad.

What a great effort by these guys to help. Now I'm going to go visit both of these other operations and spend some money while visiting them.

It's good to hear that there are continuing efforts to save as much as possible of the historic artifacts, even when it means removal to be used elsewhere. Much better than the easy but cruel alternatives.

Thanks for spreading the word about this great example of thoughtful preservation!

I'm sure there is a long discussion I missed, but why did the McCloud end up shutting down?

The McCloud RY lost their last big shipper the mill in Burney, CA in 2007 to trucks and the passenger traffic could not sustain the line.

Martin ran two excellent photo charters showing each engine making it's final runs on the McCloud line. I produced a video of
those runs. Two shots on the last photo charter are especially good: early morning glint shots off the side of #25 and then
later on Martin found an excellent location with Mt. Shasta in the background. Great memories for sure. Just glad these two
"old beauties" are still around "doing their magic."

One tank will be at the OCSR enginehouse between the road crossing and the #90.
