Steam & Excursion > NH #3025 - Lerro Photo Charter at the ValleyDate: 05/23/12 13:47 NH #3025 - Lerro Photo Charter at the Valley Author: Mgoldman On Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22nd, Lerro Productions sponsored a
rare, if not the first ever, photo charter at the Valley Railroad in Essex, CT. Certainly, the first ever featuring newly restored Mikado #3025 lettered and painstakingly altered to resemble a class J1a to follow the number sequence of the New Haven's J1 class, which covered numbers 3000-3024. The engine, sister to Susquehanna /Bel-Del's #142 was built by Tangshan Locomotive Works in China in 1989 for the Knox & Kane Railroad. The engine's original number was 1658, but later it became the 58. Extensive modifications were made to Americanize and "Hew Haven-ize" the engine including a new cab with arched windows, and extensive work to rebuild the slope back tender with it's handle rails into a proper New Haven look. Not only that, but the engine is fitted with genuine New Haven headlights, bell, whistle, and marker lights - about all that is left of the New Haven regarding it's steam fleet. Anyways - here's one of several photos to come featuring the event. For the first time in recent history, a weather forecast from 4 days earlier actually held true. Still, a great time was to be had by the 40 to 50 patrons in attendance and the rain and the conditions made for some unique opportunities. Special thanks to the crew and staff at the Valley for making this possible. A class act all the way around and a pleasure to work with! /Mitch PS - The engine was turned at Old Saybrook for this event - lol, we were looking for light on the nose (and unique photo ops). The engine was due to be re-wyed Wednesday per the Valley's preference for operating steam facing North. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/23/12 22:45 by Mgoldman. Author: rcall31060 Mitch, why is it that the class lights on this engine look like Pyle Nationals in some photos and something else altogether in other photos? Am I imagining this? Do I need new glasses? Help!

Tuesday's engineer, Bruce Edgerton, has his own oil lights, and uses them whenever he's running. You can always tell when Bruce is the engineer. /Mitch Date: 05/24/12 09:54 Re: NH #3025 - More to come after rain delay... Author: rcall31060 Interesting! Thanks for confirming that I've not gone "round the bend", yet!

Author: choochoocharlie Thanks for all the fantastic NH 3025 shots. Since I grew up back there I have a very sentimental spot for the New Haven Railroad. So it is great to see that the New Haven lives on and is alive and well in steam.
