What great pictures. I wonder if I'll ever see this engine run. Funny, the ceiling tile choice looks like a bad one for this building.

Any word as to what repair is still on-going and or needed?

Lotsa boiler work, but there's quite a bit more jacket off than was done a couple
months ago so some progress is being made.

Hi Margaret,
This was always my favorite loco as I helped restore it and ran it for so many years and I too miss it. I am sure it will depend on how much work Ed will have them do on 844 this winter as to determine the amount of work that gets done on 3985.

I know it's pretty routine, but it always makes me a little sad to see #3985 disassembled.

When was the last time it ran? Two years ago?

Actually, my favorite is the Youtube video of her pulling the freight up Archer Hill, all 143 cars, no diesel....

That's my favorite too. I always make my non-rail friends watch that, then the pacing video by Skip W at track speed...gets 'em every time.

Yes, the 3985 is a VERY impressive and wonderful
beast! Awesome! What steam locomotives can do.....
few people today outside the railfan and tourist railroad
and main-line steam community realize just how powerful
and capable these machines are.

(A non-railfan lady friend of mine looked a the arty
photo of Bob Kittel standing in front of one of the
3751's huge 80-inch drivers and could not believe that
was a real photo, that had not been altered in a major way just
to make the driver look so huge. I assured her it was REAL!)

Re-watched that video - what impresses me about that locomotive is the sound of the exhaust coming out of the exhaust stack - so crisp and powerful.

4014 is going to be great, but 3985 is a grand old lady and I'm sure we all hope she remains in service. We should all be grateful for UP and their steam program. You can paint all the modern diesels in heritage paint you want, and don't get me wrong I think that is great in it's own right but the three steam locomotives in the UP steam program are windows to our past. Running them is hard work of a nature today's youth don't understand. These engines helped America Win two wars (WWII and Korea). they are living breathing monuments to the railroaders who designed, built, and operated these majestic machines. Operating big steam in winter, especially in the Rockies, is no pick nick. It never get's old seeing these wonderful machines out on the high iron where they belong.
