My first 611 chase in 1983
Author: milfordgap

I chased this with a friend in 1983 from Roanoke to the south. I have no idea of the locations of most of these photos. If you know, feel free to comment.

1,2) In Roanoke

... And that's it.

Your third shot appears to have been taken from the Blue Ridge Parkway overhead bridge about a mile west of Webster. That's Webster Road (old U.S. 460) adjacent to the railroad.

I wonder if the last shot is over the James River bridge north of
Lynchburg, VA. I attach my stupid picture I took there to campare the
bridges.

Yep.

Fourth shot is Altavista, VA: http://goo.gl/maps/Y0bl8

The 'milepost 326' shot is the Yadkin River bridge just north of Spencer: http://goo.gl/maps/6txz4

The other bridge could be the Catawba at Belmont http://goo.gl/maps/gCVDb , or between Blacksburg and Gaffney http://goo.gl/maps/cyfo1 , but neither is a perfect match.

The dates of the trip are April 30 - May 1, overnighting at Salisbury. 611 spent the winter between 1982 and 1983 in Roanoke.

No doubt many of the locations will be identified by TO members familiar with the area, which I am not. Great set of images!

That's a damn fine looking locomotive, and the best locomotive around for excursions.

She's putting out a lot more smoke in these shots then she usually did in regular service or in her later excursion career.
