Will she run again?
Author: tiderail

614 awaits her fate in Clifton Forge, Saturday Sept. 7th. Does anyone know what is in store for her?

Landlocked???? And how did it get there??? It can be easily moved. I believe Ross has said, waiting for the right time and circumstances. Who wants to invest a million and give it a mission?

For the umpteenth time here's the simple, straight forward answer. When/if CSX changes its basic attitude to running mainline steam then we can have a serious discussion of establishing an operating mission worthy of investing the substantial funds ( $ 750,000-$ 1,000,000 ) to put her back into active service.

Until then she is on public display at a most appropriate place, the COHS, where she receives lots of TLC and entertains lots of folks.

Hope springs eternal!!

It's painted and not rusting away, and the ditch lights are a safety appliance for when it runs again, even with or without FRA rules. I love how people like to tell others what to do with their money, time, and toys. Maybe Ross should put it away in a barn where no one can see it. Thanks for letting us see it Ross.

It's obvious she receives lots of TLC.. What a beauty! She looks fantastic especially for an outdoor display!

Is that a ex C&O Business car behind the 614, and what are the other cars in the backround?

The Buckingham branch "snuck" it in without CSX's permission.

I was told this by the volunteers at the museum in Clifton Forge

I believe that's a diner behind the 614. And those other passenger cars are the derelect, totally neglected passenger cars of the C&OHS.

So,,,,you believe everything you see/read in/on the news?

C&O 614 needs the full FRA mandated 15 year "inspection" and re-certification.

You think those are derelect neglected passenger cars; be damn glad that they are not outside in the B&O R.R. Museum front yard. They have the only collection of B&O passenger cars left from the "golden age of Passenger Operations" and you should see how they are NOT cared for. Here's an example of the Food Bar Coach B&O 3000. Believe me, they do not take care of their passenger cars.

That's a Penn Central song.

Yeah, I know it's "green"

What law says a steam loco has to be black? There's one out in Oregon that looks pretty good in other colors. I think the 614 looks great in green. And then there's all the mainline steam in Britain, oh, never mind..........

As for ditch lights, it's 2013 guys.

Again for the triple umpteenth time we added the ditch lights for the 1996-98 NJTransit program which had 614 running track speed through very heavy grade crossing territory that has a bad history of crossing accidents.

The ditch lights would give the ambulance chasing lawyers one less thing to try and hang thier hat on. Gratefully we ran all 26 trips without incident, carried 23,500 passengers and ran 98.6% on time.

We fabricated black leather covers for them to be used on photo run-bys only. No, the covers will not be used while she's on display as they'd be stolen in no time. Sad but true.

Thanks for your interest. Ross Rowland

I think we can all handle ditch lights if it means steam running track speed. I do hope they don't put them on the J though.

Stop worring about the ditch lights folks. Be glad that a famous steam engine will be operating. Like Ross stated, we don't need money grabbing attorneys looking for anything going wrong.
If the diesel engine had not been invented all steam engines would have ditch lights today.
