Reading T-1's
Author: ClubCar

In the past month there has been some discussions about the famed Reading T-1's, 4-8-4 Steam engines.
Here are a couple of photos. The first shows both the 2100 and the 2101 when they were in the Striegel Equipment Company scrap yard in Baltimore (Curtis Bay), Maryland. These engines were sold to Striegel in 1967 by the Reading Company. Mr. Striegel at one time planned to restore one of these locomotives; however he never did so and so Mr. Ross E. Rowland, Jr. purchased both engines in 1975 and restored the 2101 to pull the American Freedom Train as engine #1.
The 2nd photo shows the 2101 as the Chessie Steam Special engine on the first day that it arrived in Baltimore and backed into the B&O Camden Station. Keep in mind that station building has been restored and is now part of the Camden Yards complex being used as a sports museum.
I obtained copies of these photos from Mr. Shelley Hopkins of Railroad Passenger Cars (RRP).

There was more than the two steamers in that first photo that might have been nice to
have saved.

It's sad to think that #2100 and #2101 are probably in worse condition now than in the pictures at Striegel. At least they're still with us.

At least several T-1's got saved and ran. None of the Trainmasters to the left got saved, anywhere in the US. One in Canada.

When is 2100 coming east? I think its almost criminal that such a fantastic locomotive is still sitting out there withering away and damaged when there are people that appreciate it and want to see it in good hands. It makes me sick to imagine. ...And poor 2101, decorated as the freedom train and then deteriorating beyond belief in the parking lot of the B&O museum. It's sad... and to think it is truly an American icon in more ways than one.

And, about 100 yards away, an Allegheny. Talk about dream locomotives for restoration! Ross...where are you!
