Who Can Identify This Backhead & The Throttle Off Her?
Author: LoggerHogger

Ok steam experts, here is a challenge for you.

I have provided you with a photo of a steam locomotive backhead to see who cat identify the loocomotive itself. I have also attached a photo of the throttle off this unigue engine to see if that helps you ID the locomotive.

I would give you the photographer of the back head, but that might give it away. I will name him when we have a winner.

Good luck!

Sierra No. 3? Looks close if it isn't, so maybe some other Rogers locomotive?

- Chaz

edit: Well, I don't think its Sierra No. 3, no power reverse on that engine. Only setup that looks kind of close is V&T 25, but I don't think that's it either.

Is it one of the Uintah mallets?

No Pete, not one of the Uintah Mallets.

Sierra Railroad #18?

Not Sierra #18. The power reverse would be the give away that it could not be #18.

Three feed lubricator so it must be a soaker.

This photo has some very interesting features: A rather small back head, which I too had erroneously assumed to be from a NG engine, yet has a power reverse. The photo may be a fairly old photo or if the photo is current, it is not under FRA because it does not have a second water glass. It is obviously oil fired. The engineers side injector is outside the cab which was fairly common. The brake system appears to be 6ET which tells us little other than it likely older rather than late steam. I'll take a guess that it was not originally an oil fired engine as the steam gauge being right at the center of the back head facing the tender would not be very convenient for an oil fireman to watch. I think you are going to have to supply a clue or two on this one Martin. Is the engine extant or is the throttle lever just a relic of a long scrapped engine?

All good observations Bret.

Yes she was built as a wood burner and later converted to burn oil. The photo is an old photo of her in her last days.

I wish she was still around but alas she is not. I have her throttle lever and one of her plates. Only a few other pieces of her survived.

Appears to me in the photo the boiler is not centered in the cab. So perhaps it was a Shay?

Sorta looks that way, but it may just be the camera angle. It would seem a Shay would have a 4 feed lubricator.

Pretty small diameter backhead. One of those SP 0-6-0Ts?

Furthermore, I don't see a notch in the cab front in front of the engineers seat. Nope. Not a Shay.

The position of the rear cab wall seen on the left would also seem to preclude it being an SP (or 'most anyone elses') shop switcher.

Not a Shay. Not Sumpter Valley.
