Locomotives 1238 & 1286
Author: ClubCar

I remember reading where the owner of the two Canadian Pacific 4-6-2's #1238 & 1286 had passed away. Does anyone know what the status is for those two steamers? I don't think that they have operated since they left the Western Maryland Scenic years ago and the last thing that I read was that they were parked on a siding somewhere in Virginia. Thanks.

Staunton, Va., last I knew of, along with some mixed and misc. passenger cars.

Found them on Google Maps. Located behind a warehouse off of Adams St, north of town. Two locomotives wrapped up, and 6-8 cars, plus caboose. Spur is on a active line looks like. How much do you think they would sell for?

Jack Showalter owns the equipment, but I believe he is still alive....

I don't know when they ran on the WM, but I filmed them as "Virginia Central" in 1993 running between Charlottesville and Clifton Forge. Got video at Buffalo Gap just before they arrived in Staunton for servicing.

Awh PLEASE don't restore them. Wouldn't you rather see a NKP Hudson or a Rock Island 4-6-2 instead?

I thought someone on here stated that he had passed away sometime back.

No. I would rather see doubleheaded locomotives any day.

Yes I would. But saving any locomotive from decay, or the scrappers torch would make me happy. BTW, where is a Hudson to restore?

There is a Nickel Plate Hudson in the Saint Louis Museum, plus a CB&Q Hudson in the Illinois Railway Museum.

Correct again Jack! Now those are 2 engines that I hope will someday run again. What do you think? Any chance?

HotWater is correct. CB&Q 3007 is at Union, 3006 is at Galesburg, 3003 is at Burlington, 3001 is at Ottumwa and 4000 is at LaCrosse.

Then there are a couple of AT&SF Hudsons still around, IIRC.

Neither one. Just my opinion, but I'm a 4-8-4 and articulated guy.

OK Hotwater...you've twisted my arm. 4-8-4's eh. OK, how 'bout a Great Northern 4-8-4, with the pumps on the front, a green boiler jacket, a red cab roof, and a goat up on the Vanderbilt tender. Will that 4-8-4 do, or, would you prefer a Frisco 4-8-4, all dolled up in the blue Frisco Meteor livery? I can't wait!

Keystone, No disrespect intended, but, given your very expansive thinking about what to restore or NOT, I think your whole setup is better suited to modelling...feel free to choose your own guage. But, when you start it up with "do this" or "don't do that" to the entire steam fan community....that is just plain wrong. When you've got your layout all set up, I suggest you host an open house so you can show off all your restoration projects, and I suppose "the junk" you don't want can be put in your deadline. I find it very difficult to believe you would argue AGAINST any steam locomotive restoration project. I know, I know, I've got my own private favorites list too....but would never consider asking anyone to bend to my opinions, or taste. Or, you could do like I do, get involved in a train simulator, and run whatever you want, as I do. I was raised in the '40s/'50s, and was around when steam ruled....those days will never be back....but I would most want to see an active steam terminal, where all the traffic was steam powered, etc....just like in the old days. which are long gone. Sigh. AA

That's kind of arrogant. I'm sure that there are plenty of Canadians who wouldn't mind restoration of these locomotives so they could operate in Canada.

I wouldn't mind seeing a pair of them doubleheaded on an excursion train somewhere in Canada, if CN or CPR had a change of heart in their policies towards excursion trains.

By the way, I rode a behind CPR 1201 on an excursion out of Ottawa. That was an enjoyable trip.

Well RuleG and Sanford White, I happen to love Canadian steam. The one steam locomotive that I was a key figure in getting restored and running, ex-C.P. Hudson 2839, is of course, Canadian. As for C.P. 1201, I photographed her in Montreal commuter service in Feb. 1960, and later, on the runs to Wakefield after her restoration. Hey, even the lady in my life was born in Canada.
