Steam & Excursion > Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?!Date: 11/23/14 10:45 Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: Brakeman_Phil Okay so this has been bugging me for a while now.
If anyone has any sort of information or even rumors, who is the official owner of the Great Northern No. 2584 in Havre, MT. I've heard everything from the city of Havre to BNSF themselves and I was hopping if anyone here can shed some light. I took these photos as I was passing through town on my was to my new job for the BNSF in Glasgow, MT. Thanks! Cheers, Brakeman_Phil Date: 11/23/14 11:07 Re: Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: NathanNon-Lifting THAT is a badass locomotive! Interesting to note that the GN went through a
mondernization effort on some of their bigger locomotives including roller bearings on all axles. Thanks for sharing! Date: 11/23/14 11:43 Re: Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: Brakeman_Phil It certainly is. One of the things I would like to see, well more like hear, is this whistle on steam. It's looks to cool and I'm sure it has a very unique sound that says "I'm a Great Northern Steam Engine".

Date: 11/23/14 11:48 Re: Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: Brakeman_Phil I don't remember seeing one, but I wasn't exactly looking and was in a bit of a hurry. Had to get to Glasgow and I wanted to get there before nightfall.

Author: nicknack I would say call up the local parks & rec department, and I bet they will know. All else fails the city or county assessor should have a list of property on the books.

I have to point this out about the CB&Q 710 in Lincoln a couple times a year. Steve Date: 11/23/14 15:59 Re: Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: blackhillshogger I believe the city of Havre is the owner and RR does some cosmetic work. I was told by one of the car foreman that it has a cracked boiler. It was involved in a serious rear end collision Aug 9, 1945 at Michigan, ND resulting in the loss of 34 lives. 2584 was on first No. 1 which was standing and struck by second No. 1 with the 2588.

I just read on greatnorthernempire.net that this engine was retired in December of 1957. I wonder why the railroad would have kept an engine on the property for over 12 years if it had a cracked boiler from the wreck. Especially in the day and age where a steam locomotive scrapping was the norm. -Fred- Date: 11/23/14 16:26 Re: Great Northern No. 2584.....Who Owns Her?! Author: LarryDoyle flyingfred Wrote:

"Unique" is the nicest thing that can be said about them. They sound dreadful, not speaking anything that could be considered a "musical" chord. Edited 1 time(s).
