UP 827, with different tender, 1956
Author: donstrack

Here is a photo from Dave England's collection. On the back it says, "Cheyenne, June 26, 1956, for boiler service at The Dalles, July 1956, later scrapped."

Take a look at the tender.

UP's Equipment Record ledger book shows that UP 827 was retired in March 1957.

Gordon McCulloh's book, A History of Union Pacific Steam, shows that the tender from UP 827 was matched with UP 814 when that engine was donated to Council Bluffs in 1961. He also shows that UP 827 was "Fitted with a 13,500-gallon tender, 827 was sent dead in-train for use as stationary boiler at The Dalles, Oregon tie plant in July 1956." Gordon's book, on page 258, also has a much better quality version of this same photo, credited to James Ehernberger. Dave does not recall where he got this particular print from, but it was some time in the late 1950s when he was buying as many photo prints of UP steam as he could afford.

I believe that pic is in one of Kratville's books, or one of Ehernberger's books.

Several FEF-1's got centipede tenders from scrapped or sidelined FEF-2's and 3's.
The FEF-1 tenders were then converted into GTEL fuel tenders.

Don't be sorry, I was just making sure, I collect books and I didn't want to completely skip over one he might have written.
