IAIS 2-10-2s ease down Davenport hill with 6000 tons.
Author: glord

I believe this was in October 2012 IAIS ran double headed steam on a frt from Iowa City to Silvis. Was very foggy till about Walcot then sun came out and I caught train coming down hill. Heard a few people complain about those foreign engines but I always liked watching them in action. Anyway IAIS has given them away and I dought they will run again at least around here. Hope I,m wrong!

This is NOT Short Line Jct!
Short Line Jct is in Des Moines.
This is Missouri Division Jct.
In Rock Island Days, this is where the Kansas City Line split from
the Colorado Line.

They're in the care of the Central States Steam Preservation Association.

I wonder if those complainers have seen any live steam since that day.

They are what they are, and they are pretty cool in my book.

Why did IAIS dump them?

I don't think that the IAIS actually owned them. The CEO of the IAIS owned them, as I recall, and Mr. Posner was the individual that purchased them in China, had them rebuilt over there (also making them FRA compliant), and then had them shipped to Iowa. Maybe Mr. Posner began to realize how expensive it was to continue to operate the two locomotives, plus the "FRA Clock" was always running, no mater whether they operated or not.

I received an email two weeks ago that had an attached pdf file containing the group's newsletter. I tried to copy it and post the link here, but wasn't able to do so. Maybe someone here can tell me how to do so.

I also do not understand some of the negative comments in the past about "foreign" steam locomotives. To me, steam is steam. And I was privileged to see QJ's like this operate in regular service in China on two different trips before they were withdrawn. Something I'm not old enough to have experienced in the U.S.

Doubble-headed mainline steam in the 2010's without a diesel and pulling a freight train. Hmmm. I do see a lot to complain about there......

I too saw steam in China in 2007, pretty late in the game, but still quite a bit :)

To me, any running steam is great steam ! Just be thankful we can still see running steam ! Nothing like its hey day in the early 19th century.

When I set out on an Iowa trip in 2008 it was only shortly before that I learned of this event. Truthfully I was skeptical but seeing those double-headed QJ's in the fog that morning was beyond belief. I'm glad I was there.

You had to be there on Oct.18, 2008 or I promise you, you cannot appreciate the mood of the day.

1) There were wall-to-wall foamers at the Moscow bridge in sun and then this heavy fog rolled in. When the train passed we literally could not see it, but I aimed and fired anyway hoping for the best. Only through the wonders of Photoshop could I pull them out of the fog slightly.
2) Pacing west of Wilton.
3) Fog begins to break a bit west of Durant.

4-6) Arriving and departing Walcott. The fog really broke during the water stop but the humidity hanging in the air allowed this incredible smoke show.

Well I think a lot people (myself included) felt that if those large amounts of money were to be spent, it would be better spent restoring and or maintaining American steam engines that have real historical value in THIS country. It was Mr Posner's (and Mr. Corman's) money and they are/were entitled to do with it what they want, but what if the money spent on the Chinese engine by Corman would have gone to C&O 2716 practically in his own back yard for instance? Could you IMAGINE what a group like the FWRHS could do with an endowment equal to what Posner spent? Just saying.....
