Though I have yet to see her in person, how many green engines are there?

I change my answer! Lol.

It's certainly not SOU 154, nor 630 nor 1401.

Forgot about #722 - and easy to see why:

Wiki:
...the Great Smoke Mountains Railroad owns two steam locomotives; 2-8-0 Consolidation #1702, and former Southern Railway 2-8-0 #722.
Both of these locomotives require extensive restoration before they can operate again. Locomotive #1702 has been out of service since the
end of the 2004 season. The 722 was never operated by the GSMR.

What's her timeline after Southern and before GSMR?  Did she operate in excursions while owned by the Southern?

Here's 722 in excursion service between Manassas and Front Royal in 1979.  This was the only time I saw her and don't know whether there were other trips or not.

After her original freight hauling days on the Southern, she was sold, along with 630, to the ET&WNC.  On the ET, 630 and 722 were numbered 207 and 208, respectively.  In 1968, the Southern traded two ex-CofG Alco RS-3s to the ET for the two consolidations.  630 went to work immediately in the excursion program, as she had flue time left.  722 was in need of major boiler work and received a heavy overhaul at Irondale before emerging in 1970, painted green.  She was the more popular of the two 2-8-0s, as she didn't constantly suffer from journal issues like the 630.  722 ran its last SR excursion in around 1979 or 1980, and was leased for a short time to the Wilmington & Western.  She joined 630 at TVRM (both engines were on loan from SR/NS at this time) in the early 80s and ran for a couple of years before being taken out of service in need of work.  In 1992, NS towed her to Asheville (after a cosmetic restoration at TVRM) where she was put on display.  Smokey got her around 2003-ish, for what I'm told was a sizable sum of money.
