Can't be 1973--the 838 was in Council Bluffs stored till circa 1975. The 4023 Big Boy came to Omaha from Cheyenne and 838 went in its place. The 3985 was on display till circa 1980-1, IIRC. Tim Vana/Omaha, NE

3985 was taken from it's display in the depot parking lot
in 1978 or 1979.  It had been put on display there in 1975.
This photo could be before it was cleaned up and painted
for the parking lot display.

We moved the 3985 to the roundhouse in 1979. Looks like after we removed the jacketing as we worked on it.

The 838 looks ready to go. Was the idea of returning 838 to service ever considered? Probably can't now due to being a parts source but two northerns would be amazing.

What year did we move the steam rotary to Hanna , it's in the back ground , I remember it being in roundhouse in 1980 when we have snow plow school, these negatives might have gotten into the 73 photos box , the mover shave not been kind to the collections

I was gonna say, because 3985 has her firebox door open, meaning she's getting worked on, great shots though!

Bittersweet to see #838 so complete as late as 1980. I wonder why both #838 and #8444 are missing their bells and number plates.

Doesn't the 838 have a cracked frame through the cast in air tank from having gone on the ground at one time.
Also the side by side shot is a good comparison of the different pilots.

According to the equipment ledger, UP 900098 was retired in December 1980. I don't have a date for when it was moved to Hanna.

Interesting pilot on the 838, a little different than 844 & 3985 have.

As I recall the bells were stored away for safe keeping in those days in the District foreman's office and applied when getting ready to go out.,

Just goes to show what Steve Lee & crew had to work with. Took those folks another 35 - 40 years to build the UP Steam Program. Those guys deserve nothing less that total respect. All those years of mainline steam....brings a tear to my eye to see what a sad state the current manager has driven the program to...:(
