Refueling an every day workhorse
Author: Q4960

Northwestern Steel & Wire in Sterling, Illinois roughly 45 years ago on one of my first visits there, being refueled.  This would have been just before the ex-GTW 0-8-0's were converted from coal to oil.  Steam lasted until 1980 and I made many trips up there.

I've heard plenty of stories of how worn out those engines were and of some of the "repairs" made there.

I can only imagine!  Would love to read some of those stories...and about those repairs!

I remember seeing an advertisement for Northwestern Steel & Wire from the 60's. It read something like: "A steam locomotive in every box of nails!".. I guess they scrapped steam engines by the hundreds back in those days!

Two of the best NWS&W shots I have seen. I was there when they were using oil. I never thought about how they coaled their locomotives.
Thanks for posting these.
