844 "incident" near Eaton, CO
Author: JHF

Have heard (rumer) that there was an "incident" of unknown type near Eaton, CO. The train was delayed because of it. Any details?

From on board, the incident was a near hit at a grade crossing just south of Eaton.  The crew had the train stopped and hit nothing.  Being on many trips when we started braking hard I knew something was up.  There were multiple special agents on board and everything was handle very professionally.  Sounds like the guy in the truck may have taken out a stop sign trying to get out of the way.

Did the driver have a camera, a radio and a baseball cap with a RR emblem on the front?

Well, congrats on creating the headline that'll surely have a TON of views by the end of the day.

And a huge antenna, and a set of locomotive horns on his roof?

All I can say what a stupid moron! I can't stand people who risk their own lives just to beat a train because they need to get from point A-B ASAP!

I don't know what the driver looked like.  Couldn't see much from back in the train, and most vestibules were full of people.

Hoping for what? If you took the time to see why the people are upset and not jump to conclusions you'd view it differently!

Generally we found that person stuck in a ditch or some other soft ground.

I don't think any of us so called haters as you put it are hoping for anything. IMHO time will tell weather all the modifications that have been made to the 844 against standard practices during the restoration project and longest boiler wash in history are going to hold up. I personally don't think they will. We shall see now won't we! It seems to me you don't like any diverging opinion that goes against what you want to believe. Your just a quote "hater" of a different type.

Thanks for the on site report of the incident. Seems the crew braked the train OK, which is the important thing. Yes, I'm teaching people how to first read (and not irrationally rant), then read between the lines. :-)

I guess we should be happy the DL didn't throw the 844 in reverse and slide the drivers again to stop the train. I guess the new MU control box is working and idled down the 1989. I know there is few people thinking it, Sorry I just had to say it.......

The box itself would not be capable of automatically "idling down" the MU'ed diesel. The Engineer in the seat of 844 would have to do that operation manually, i.e. turn the throttle rotary switch back to idle.

I would think he could just drop the generator field on the MU box. I think I saw that on the photo.
