Date: 08/12/16 21:00 Re: Shrinkwrapped tender? Author: up3985 I thought it was 3985s, at least that's what I thought when I saw pics of it.
Date: 08/12/16 22:21 Re: Shrink-wrapped tender? Author: Odyssey Back in May at Cheyenne Depot Days and the UP steam shop tour, the "shrink-wrapped" tender was identified as belonging to the 3985. They needed room in the roundhouse for prepping parts for the 844 ... of course things could've changed since then ... eh?

Maybe thats it. 844's tender would be just fine if DL hadn't trashed it with his "boiler treatment" chemicals..... Date: 08/12/16 22:37 Re: Shrinkwrapped tender? Author: CaliforniaSteam tva429 Wrote:

Those chemicals worked great, trashed the locomotive and tender both at the same time. I'm sure they are being used all over again with a few minor adjustments of course. I would think if it was 3985's tender it would just be sitting out in the elements. CS Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/12/16 22:39 by CaliforniaSteam. Date: 08/14/16 07:57 Re: Shrinkwrapped tender? Author: dan what is the current treatment, think it is strong stuff 1oz per 1000 gallons or was it 4 oz?
lets be glad the tender got wrapped, that shows care for the 3985. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/14/16 10:03 by dan. Date: 08/14/16 08:21 Re: Shrinkwrapped tender? Author: Realist dan Wrote:

Some places a gallon of it per 1,000 gallons of water or even more. Date: 08/14/16 08:36 Re: Shrinkwrapped tender? Author: dan what is the chemical , how does it work? what did the old crew and new crew, differences?

------------------------------------------------------- > what is the chemical , how does it work? > what did the old crew and new crew, differences? Use the search function. It is a set of products to treat water that is not intended for use in high temperature environments, like making steam, for example. It comes from a company with no background in locomotive boiler water treatment. It also becomes toxic and corrosive when added to water that has been chlorinated...........which is pretty much the only water available except maybe directly from a creek or ditch or pond. When it is mixed into the water, it changes into a dilute form of acid, and starts attacking all metal surfaces it comes in contact with. This is why the tender baffles were eaten away, the piping eaten away, etc. To top it off, the stuff was set up to treat only water from Cheyenne. Like most treament chemical purveyors, the very idea of getting water from difference cities and sources is bizarre, so the product doesn't play well with anything else but. Boiler water treatment was argued about for genertaions at meetings of the old Master Boilermakers Association. Everybody had their own idea. The take-away was if you find something that works for your operation, stick to it. |
