Steam & Excursion > SP4449 & UP96 at the Oregon Rail Heritage FoundationDate: 06/23/17 22:43 SP4449 & UP96 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation Author: Odyssey Back in February I decided to sign-up for the SP4449 Portland-Bend-Portland excursion trip which departs tomorrow morning (6/24) from Portland at 8:35am PDT. I took the opportunity today to visit the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation engine house to get a shot or two of the SP4449 before it moved from there to the Portland Union Station this evening. Along with the SP4449 the UP96 was also easily accessible inside the engine house. The ORHF facility is a class act and well worth a visit if you pass through Portland ... so first some shots of SP4449. It was nosed-in to its tool car, the Gordon Zimmerman, so I cropped these shots of the SP4449. I will find out in the morning how the consist was finally assembled:
1) SP4449 from the front perspective 2) SP4449 from its tender perspective 3) some builder plate and other historic information Date: 06/23/17 22:48 Re: SP4449 & UP96 at the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation Author: Odyssey Now for the UP96 ... it looks to be in very good hands ...
4) A view from the left front 5) A view from the rear 6) A classic emblem Thanks for lookin' ... will try to post images from the ride tomorrow! When they met was his first hint his plan to dispose of it unraveled. Once the shock wore off he did try to take credit for it, but the real thanks for saving it goes to Steve Lee himself. Steve made a few phone calls, talked to the right people, got Doyle and Jack Wheelihan involved and the rest is history. Many kudos to the folks at the Union Pacific who listened and acted to make it happen. 'ol 96 could not be in a better place. you are riding this wonderful trip! Now I see agai why the Daylights were nicknamed "yellow-jacked" in the steam era, as the orange has a pronounced yellow cast to it -- at least on my monitor it does. Same as my early 1950s slide of the "Coast Daylight" at Goldtree (SP west of SLO) which has not color-shifted at all, and the orange on the engine and cars does have that same pronounced yellow cast to it. Thanks for the great pix of the UP 96, too -- and for the close-ups of the UP herald and the UP steam herald on the 96. Love that! Look for the little 'F' (which isn't shown in your photos). Charlie Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/24/17 09:36 by cewherry. |
