Where to find 4449 location updates?
Author: gobbl3gook

I've looked for 4449 location updates, tried Twitter, Facebook, Trainorders, and sp4449.org, with no luck.

If anyone has a source, or can post the current location, I'd be interested. (I'm free in Portland at present, would like to see it come in if it hasn't already).

TIA, Ted in OR

That siding is AVERY WA where teh SP 4449 has been stopped for a few minutes.
This is Milepost 103 . The mileposts count starting in Portland OR eastward direction.

Go to the ORHF-Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation's FB page, scroll down, and you will see the link to their Twitter feed. They've been doing updates both days as to where they are when cell phone service is viable.

As mentioned, underway again. Likely going to stop again at Lyle (MP 87.1) for another eastbound.

Thanks for the info! They could use a link to that from the various sp4449 social media sites.

Yup, it gets a little hot just about axle number 6. In 2006 they stopped to check. Now, I don't think they bother. They just know it's the firebox.

Some of the questions in this thread were answered "real time" for those listening to the scanner during the chase.

Pasco West dispatcher issued a Form C where SP 4449 was exempt from following certain procedures when the hot axles were detected between First and Eighth axles is what I heard on the radio as the train was about to cross the Celilos Bridge. Something about "at the discretion of the trainmaster."

Hours of Service issues were addressed when SP 4449 was Avery, where Pasco West dispatcher asked when does the crew die (19:20?), then the crew answered that they have replacements that are good until 21:00. I'm guessing the dispatcher was pondering a strategy to minimize delays to trains, because he knew Amtrak #28 was coming. I overheard him chat with another crew that both "Amtrak Steam" and Amtrak (#28) were going to be delayed, so he was trying to figure out the best way.
