A Steam Locomotive Arrives in Como
Author: Odyssey

The Ex-Klondike#4 Baldwin Locomotive was transported from the Wasatch Railroad Contractors facilities in Cheyenne to Como, CO on Aug 15. A long day, but a very rewarding one. Sort of puts it together for the restoration projects in Como and will make this Como Railroad Day on Saturday, Aug 19 a really special one!

First three images:

1) The locomotive arrives in Como
2) Ex-Klondike#4 and South Park looking east towards Kenosha Pass
3) A view from the roundhouse and turntable looking towards "downtown" Como and where the locomotive is waiting to be offloaded

There are three more ...

4) Como volunteers laying panel rail
5) off loading the Ex-Klondike #4
6) filling the boiler ... water from the VFD tanker truck

Enjoy ...

To give a "feel" for the area, here are two captures of the USGS topo map for Como in 1937 showing the C&S track. The first image is the whole topo map CO_COMO_402263_1937_6250_geo_pdf (this is the USGS file name which can be used to search for it on the USGS web site). The second is the detail showing the Como trackage from the topo map. If Todd would give me a one time exception, I can up load the whole PDF file which has amazing detail and also shows Boreas Pass into Breckenridge CO.

Question: How will they install those turntable bridge bogie wheels, which fit under each end, with all that extra weight of the ties?

Who is fronting all the money for this? And, you would think they would wait on putting water in the boiler until they got the tender mounted, smoke stack back on, and the track ready.

Probably with a jack as they would have when they were serviced to give them just enough clearance to be installed.

Thanks, Odyssey, for nailing the action at Como, Colorado, August 15, 2017. Impressive number of volunteers on a weekday!

Amazing. Just amazing. When I moved to Colorado in 1979, I made many trips on 285 out through South Park and by Como, stopping there a couple of times. Windswept isolation and solitude. Never would I have imagined that anything like this would happen. Hats off to those making it happen!

I believe the TT support wheels were installed when the table was set in place on the center bearing in the pit.

Here is the real question? Or two. How much track do they plan to lay in Comp? How much track can they realistically lay based on current land ownership in Como?

Nope. You can see the bogies sitting on top of the ties, on the turntable bridge, in one of the above photos. Plus, viewing the video of the crane lowering the turntable bridge into place on the center bearing, plainly shows that the bogies are NOT in place.

We put the water in the boiler because the fire department was available at that time. I am very grateful for the assistance of the Como - Jefferson VFD They even brought water up on Saturday. The Como project is a joint venture between Chuck and Kathy Brantigan, The South Park Rail Society and the DSP&P Historical Society.
