RBM&N 425 - Solo to Glen Summit
Author: tehachapi-dave

On Sept. 9, 2017. Reading & Northern Light Pacific #425 pulled a round trip excursion from Mountain Top, PA to Jim Thorpe and return. The afternoon return trip was led only by the 425, the GP39RN used on the way down was not to be in the consist. Without the diesel helper, the 425 had no problem tackling the 1.3% grade north of White Haven, PA, conquering it with almost an ease and elegance that the Baldwin product has become famous for. So sit back, turn up the speakers. and watch the 425 tackle the hills of Northeastern Pennsylvania once again, Enjoy!

That is an awesome video. You did well, not all bells and whistles, you can see and hear the 425 working. Great job. And great job R&N for running perhaps the best steam excursion in the USA with matching open window cars!

I'm amazed at how loud that engine is. One shot the bell was ringing and you couldn't even hear it. 1522 was like that and I loved it. I need to find a way to get up and see 425 firsthand.

Super video. Level tripod, smooth zooms and limited panning. All the things that make for a watchable video. Nice work!

I had been known to go out of my way to make a racket with 1522. Not that it took any effort. I have tinnitus now from running her, but damn it was worth it.

Congratulation son on video of the day, been a while,

This is a question for the knowledgeable steam guys. Why does the 425 make so much noise from an engineering standpoint. TJ and I have chased and ridden the 261 this year , and chased the 611 and 4449 as well and I saw the 844 at Frontier Days and none of these large steam engines makes as much noise as the little 425, why? Last year we were under a 4 lane highway overpass as the 425 went through with the whistle and bell ringing and under the highway overpass all we heard was the exhaust. At times the 425 exhaust sounds like a jet engine.

We have two tickets for the open gon on the railfan trip next month and can't wait.

Thanks for the input,

Tehachapi-dave

Frisco1522, I always appreciated the effort, but seeing 425 certainly takes me back home to watching "your" loco pull hard up Iron Hill. Fall trips on the R&BMN are always a treat, and they really tug on the throttle out of Port Clinton. This compilation is still my favorite that anyone has put together, credit to Joe Fusco: Hometown Hill is the place to be, and that's at the end of the video.

Where can one find tickets for that event?

Reading & Northern passengers ops page: http://www.rbmnrr-passenger.com/fall-foliage-outer-station

The Fall Foliage trains into Jim Thorpe are very popular and very often sell out. Tickets for October 14th, R&N 425 only, are sold out.

Great video!  What RR ran on this line, before CONRAIL existed?
