Steam & Excursion > She Has Many Years Of Service Behind Her & Many Ahead Of Her Too!Date: 10/20/17 03:14 She Has Many Years Of Service Behind Her & Many Ahead Of Her Too! Author: LoggerHogger It is doubtful that any of the assembly crew at the Schenectady plant in 1882 could have predicted what the years ahead would bring for this 4-4-0 when they first built her for the Central Pacific Railroad. What a life she would have.
Originally built as the second #110 for the CP this eight-wheeler was later numbered by the SP as their #1278 before finally being given the #1349. We see her in this first shot in Portland, Oregon in 1910 when she already has 28 years of service behind her. She would still have another 13 years of service ahead of her with the SP. In March 1923, with 41 years of service completed, the SP decided it was time to retire her. However, that would not be the end of the line for #1349 as she was purchased by the Red River Lumber Co. for logging service at their Westwood, California operation. As we see in the second photo, taken at Westwood, #1349 has sprouted the various auxiliary appliances that were common to logging locomotives, no matter what they were in their prior life. #1349 would go on to serve The Red River Lumber Co. for another 17 years before finally being retired and scrapped in 1940. That was over 58 years after she left the Schenectady plant as a new engine! Martin Edited 5 time(s). Last edit at 10/20/17 03:28 by LoggerHogger. By the time of the 1910 photo she likely had her smokebox replaced and lost the plates in that process.

thought of the merit of preserving a 58 year old locomotive, a locomotive of CP heritage, no less. Odd that a logging company would find value in a 4-4-0 type locomotive. Nice collection of shots, Martin - and as always, a welcome history lesson! /Mitch Date: 10/20/17 08:27 Re: She Has Many Years Of Service Behind Her & Many Ahead Of Her Author: LoggerHogger Mitch,
There actually were quite a few 4-4-0 locomotive used by loggers. They were nearly always used and cheap to buy. Here is Brooks-Scanlon's #1 here in Bend, Oregon. She came very used but lasted for a number of years in logging service. Martin Date: 10/20/17 08:49 Re: She Has Many Years Of Service Behind Her & Many Ahead Of Her Author: sp4294 Red River also had a sister engine to the 1349, the 1341, which they acquired via their purchased of the Anderson & Bella Vista Railway (aka: California Shasta & Eastern) in the 1920's. I thought I had read somewhere that the 1349 had also spent a brief amount of time on the A&BV, but I'm probably mistaken on that part. The 1341 was eventually sent up to Westwood after sitting idle in Anderson for a period of time.
