Looks like NS won't be allowing 611 or any other steam excursions on their railroad in the coming year even under the Amtrak "umbrella". It was nice while it lasted a second time and my thanks go out to the folks at NS for allowing it to happen. Hopefully 611 gets a chance to stretch her legs again sometime soon.

There an official press release either from the Museum or Norfolk Southern stating this?

How many solid maroon cars does the museum have access to?

Since when has TrainOrders let the absence of official sources or press releases stopped it?

Certainly NOT to be confused with all those "official press releases" by Trains Magazine, concerning the RDG 2100, and all those high dollar photo freights on WMSR with 1309.

All I can think of is that post a year or two back about how BNSF would no longer allow steam on their tracks...and then said post was almost immediately proven wrong when a steam excursion on BNSF (can't remember if it was 4449 or those cancelled trips with 765) was announced.

So, does this mean we're going to hear of a trip on Norfolk Southern? *coughtongueincheekcough*

Ferry moves to other railroads are still an option? If NS ran an excursion, Hunter would be all over that from CSX.

This just in. Norfolk Southern has put in new guidelines as to 611 deadhead moves!

All washout plugs are to be removed and handed over to railroad authorities before the locomotive can enter N.S. property. This is to make sure that no more than a few ounces of liquid may be contained within the boiler in the name of homeland security. Also, the locomotive must be shrink-wrapped in a reflective, safety orange coating for visibility.

Additionally, if more than one passenger car in N&W colors is being transported with the locomotive, they must be separated by at least one non matching car as variety is the spice of life.

This new policy is official, having come from Winton A. Blunderbuss III with the Acme Press Agency.

So there you have it folks, straight from the horse's............. can I use that word?

I've heard rumblings that insurance on NS has changed to make it financially impossible to run excursions. But I would expect ferry moves and Amtrak trips to still be possible. Time will tell.

They're certainly making repairs as though they're planning to run *somewhere*.

I'd like to see someone comment on those repairs, because what they are having to fix doesn't seem to line up with the short time 611 has been back in service, however, not being an expert on those matters I don't wish to speculate.
