Reproduction applied temporarily. Anybody have clues about the original's whereabouts?

Gotta be Santa Fe 2926, they must be getting very close to a preliminary steam up now..in fact Trains magazine said it would be on
March 18th in a recent online blurb, but I got clarification from CMO Rick Kirby that this wasn't the case.

There was a TYPO error that changed live streaming video on Saturday to "live steaming" video. Steam will be later on, but approaching.

When you do find the original it will be made out of cast steel and not brass.

Interesting.

Martin, I always thought those non-brass serial/builder plates were cast iron.

Jack,

They have added steel to make them less brittle.

Even more interesting! But then, do they have to be annealed occasionally?

Thanks.

Any thoughts to making additional reproduction builder plates and selling them as fund-raisers???

Can anyone give the EXACT location of Baldwin in Eddystone? Lat/long is okay, too.

Google Earth shows a "Baldwin Locomotive Works" still in part of an X-shaped tall building next to a main line, and next to that is quite a bit of empty or unused land and a Walmart Supercenter. Betcha that's the place. === === = === JLH

I am enclosing photos of what an original plate from one of the AT&SF 2900's looks like. I wish that I still had this plate in my collection but it was sold many years ago.

When Santa Fe had their large auction at Topeka Railroad Days years ago, there was a stack of plates. They started out fairly reasonable, but the left and right pair from #2900 itself brought $10,000.

Viewing 2926's mounted repro builder's plates may be possible under steam later this summer in Abq, as many loco finishup projects are currently buzzing away, a committed core of crawl-under, tight-squeeze, heavy wrench-turners, pipe-bending, dirt-chewing, crowded-connections guys...and gals...making sure connections are all tight.

Biggest current job--mounting custom-cut, shiny black replacement sheet metal over the boiler and backhead insulation, sporting auto quality finish courtesy of a local pro shop.
Gauges and controls are mounted. Spiffy new captain's chairs await a cab crew.
the second turbogenerator hookup and all wiring is close to lightup.
A trailing unit brake line and 27-pin MU circuitry are ready for any pulling power combo needed.
The replaced ATS system is installed with PTC provisions being worked out.
A modern, 26L replacement brake sytem is installed.

A city fireplug sits near the engine house, ready to hose 25000 gallons of water into the monster tender; fuel is available locally to pour 7000 gallons of oil fuel into the other tender tank.

NMSL's coming crew/maintenance/tool car, a former ATSF/Amtrak baggage smooth-sider, should arrive in Abq this summer for custom interior renovation, a large air compressor install, along with travelling crew quarters.
The car, being prepped in Ohio for its trip to NM, still needs funds to cover local finish work. To help out, go to http://nmslrhs.org/

I'm curious, what is the most a builder's plate has fetched?
$10,000 for the 2900 builder's plate is definitely at the high end, recently
one from a Pennsy I-1sa went for $1600 on eBay, which was a relative bargain
in comparison.

Re: Builder's Plate

Several years ago, We stopped at a casino in Laughlin, NV and went to lunch at the buffet. I found quite a bid of RR stuff hanging around here and there as wall décor. I noticed this Baldwin builders plate and a couple of number plates I thought were from a tender. I thought possibly this may have been 5028's engine & tender plates. However, I just found the photo, and looked up the number, 69806, and it matches up to Santa Fe 4-8-4 2918. It was scrapped, and I suppose it could have swapped tenders a time or two, and went to the furnace with 2-10-4 5028's tender, which were the same type. At the time, I thought it might be a repro, but it was cast iron, so it may have been legit.

That one was the real deal.
