Heber Valley Getting More Diesels; Steam Status?
Author: CPR_4000

I just read on FB that Heber Valley has bought three ex-Boston & Maine GP9's from Guilford/Pan Am. Makes me wonder about the status of Heber's steam power. The Heber Valley website doesn't spell out how far along 618's rebuild is, and says that 75 was expected to be completed in 2016, which I don't think has happened.

From a few friends that work behind the scenes, getting the 618 out the door is still very much a priority and sometime this year isn't out of the question. I know the railroad is now on a sound financial footing and hauled well over 100K passengers last year. They've been getting their excursion consist, grounds and facilities into first class condition over the last decade and the place really is a pleasure to visit, steam or no steam.

Thinking for myself I'd surmise that having steam available next year would be a priority when Utah becomes the center of the railroad universe for a few weeks in May.

But yeah, the website... That could use some current steam info.

Hmmm, I'm wondering what a geep would look like in B&M McGinnis paint, but with the letter H and V superimposed, like the B and M in the original.

I would think that Mr. Manwiller will paint the units into a VERY nice D&RGW scheme, in order to represent the heritage of the Heber Valley.

I guess, the folks who ride and pay the bills...don’t care too much what is pulling them. I’ve RIDDEN the line with photo charters, and have enjoyed BOTH steam locomotives, including a doubleheader. Funny....

Per a quote from Mr. Manwiller, "Steam is coming at the speed of the money!".

That's the plan. Painting and lettering diagrams have already been acquired.

Not a criticism, but I can report that having seen #75 within the past few months, the boiler is still upside-down off the running gear with portions of the firebox still cut out, so it will not be ready to go in 2016.
