Why is there a black tarp on the pilot?

It covers a very beautiful wood pilot and protects it from the Oregon rain. On the special, it was covered to enhance the prototypical look of the engine for visiting photographers who preferred it.

Can we see some photos of the nice wood pilot ? I don't ever remember seeing a locomotive with a bra, or tarp on it's pilot before. I'm guessing the wood pilot is too nice or fancy to look prototypical. Did this loco originally just have a step board pilot ? I suppose some purists would object to the headlight bulb looking a bit more modern, too, but probably a bit more practical than the original light source.

Here is the wood pilot that was under the cover.

For the next charters we will cover it in removable black paint.

That pilot does look nice, and I was thinking the same thing about the removable paint. Looks like somebody is an artist with wood, and they just couldn't help themselves, making it functional and beautiful too. That really looks like it would have been a fun project. I like working with both metal and wood where some people seem to prefer working with one or the other.

Thanks for adding the photo.

Shame to cover up such a beautiful pilot. Was it tarped because it's not prototypical to the locomotive? It would be nice to see the natural finish at least part of the time in October.
