Steam & Excursion > Speed it up Mom! with UP 8444 - back in 1964?

1- Pacing 8444 Westbound along I-84 (I-80N back then)--Starting just east of The Dalles. OR- We have my father and myself (2 yrs old) in the backseat shooting some some Reg 8 movie film. To this day my mother is not happy with being asked to drive 80 mph in order to catch up to the locomotive. Stopping at The Dalles depot.

2-celilo park rest area- eastbound, most likely the City of Portland, some Columbia River barge traffic and in the background some SP&S activity across the river in Wishram, WA. Then 8444 heading home.

3-A couple EB GP's crossing the mouth of the Deschutes River.

Not the best film, with the shadows and direct sunlight, but it sure brings back some great memories when my father announced movie night with the projector and big screen at home.

Very magical and sometimes almost psychedelic!
Love how extra "flashy" that oscillating red end of train light came out, in the "going away" shot of the passenger train!

Well worth a second look again, later, after work.

Wow! That is some fantastic footage your father got! And, yes, she did run FAST for many years, and you had to drive very fast (bust the speed limit!) to catch her when she was out and about! (Not surprising,since ALCO and the UP designed her to cruise at 100 per for miles and iles with no problems.

Thanks so much for this great film from way back when, not that long after the end of the steam era. Please post more if you have any!

Your mom probably either didn't like going fast or (likely) was gonna get caught by a cop speeding! Great video and that pack g remi need me when my dad and I chased 4449 down Sierra HWY back in 84 doing 75!

Thank you Margaret and ALL that have replied with the nice comments_just getting started with digitizing my dad’s Reg 8 movie film, this wraps up reel #1.

9 more reels to go regarding railroad and then the family related . I’m thanking my dad now for all The splicing and separating by category that he did.

I don't get QUITE as excited as I did when I was 9 years old seeing the UP 8444 at speed, but pretty close!
