Steam & Excursion > 611 DayDate: 06/11/18 13:28 611 Day Author: gregscholl Since today is June 11, or 611 day it would be sad to not show at least a few images.
1958 was the last year in regular N&W passenger service. These shots by my wife Kathi were made on the Greensboro-Roanoke Trip on the Saturday in April 2017. I did some cropping and such. Hope they fit here. #1-North of Danville climbing out of the valley #2 Gretna curve where new rail was recently installed #3-#4 on next post Greg Scholl http://www.gregschollvideo.com Edited 1 time(s). shots will have to do. #1 Trees in focus nearing Moneta. I am down below with video, and cropped out #2 Same spot taken from Wooden overpass, with Greg omitted. The train had stopped maybe 1/2 a mile prior to this and then was starting up and making lots of good exhaust sights and sounds. This is on the ex-Virginian Rwy westbound toward Roanoke. Rainy weekend for sure, but glad we saw 611 at least once in 2017. Hope she runs again! But why do crews insist on wearing those obnoxious safety vests while on the loco? Understandable while on the ground. But they do stick out in the photos. In the U.K. orange vests are everywhere. But I don't recall seeing crews wearing them whilst on the loco on main line steam excursions. (and the consists match too!)

They do it just to annoy guys like you and Keystone1 Posted from iPhone Date: 06/11/18 17:29 Re: Last two 611 from 2017 Author: Keystone1 Hey andersonb109........I told you that you were starting to sound and think like me. See, looking period and not ruining photos makes sense, doesn’t it. Welcome aboard buddy!

Date: 06/12/18 10:00 Re: Last two 611 from 2017 Author: wcamp1472 I don’t recall that safety vests are required to be worn in steam loco cabs.
They are susceptible to catching on fire, too. Seems like a laziness thing to remove the vests, when in the cabs, if not actively servicing a stopped steam loco... I work at construction sites, proudly wearing one... we have a lot of mobile equipment and heavy crane use.... it gives me the security I need, that I am seen... even if I am distracted, or focused on other work.
