Steam, Steel and Strobes VIII Scholarship Contest 2019
Author: Scrise

For the eighth year, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum is offering a special Steam, Steel, and Strobes Scholarship to attend the railroad’s annual photo events in February. The competition is open to individuals from ages 18-30, prior winners are not eligible.
There are two grand prize awards. The grand prize includes free admittance to the photo shoot, a $500 stipend and lodging for two nights. There are also two runner-up awards that include free admittance to the photo shoot and a $250 stipend. All winners will have the chance to work with professional photographer Steve Crise during the February 2019 events.
To apply for the scholarship, e-mail three low-resolution images of your photography with a proposal of no more than 250 words to Mark S. Bassett, president@nnry.com. Your images must include your last name at the beginning of all file names of your three submissions; you must also watermark all three images with your last name and file number, in the lower right hand corner of the image with a color that is easily readable. For example if your name is Joe Smith, your three submissions file names should be Smith001, Smith002, Smith003. Your watermark should use the same naming sequencing. Subject matter does not necessarily have to included locomotives or trains. Your proposal should introduce yourself, explain your photographic philosophy and explain why you should be selected as the scholarship winner.
Entries must be received by 5:00 pm PST on December 14, 2018. In the subject of the e-mail, please put “Steam, Steel, and Strobes Scholarship 2018.” Failure to follow the entry procedures will disqualify the entry.
During the second and third weekends in February, the Nevada Northern Railway hosts its annual Winter Steam Spectacular Photo Shoot. Over two and half days, the photographers are given full access to the railroad and an unlimited amount of photo possibilities. The railroad is hidden away in the high desert of east central Nevada.  Now a National Historic Landmark, it is a time capsule like no other, time stopped here. You’ll be able to photograph railroading as it was in the last century.
The Nevada Northern Railway is not a mishmash of equipment from different railroads or different countries, nor is the equipment prettified or garish. This is the original railroad equipment in the original paint schemes in the original settings. All of this equipment has been at the railroads for decades and in some cases over a century. It is still operating on the original track that was graded and laid over century ago.
What can you expect during the photo shoots? World-class photographic opportunities, steam locomotives pulling vintage freight and passenger cars that are original to the railroad. Here, trains are still made up with wooden cars whose origins date back as far as 1872. The crews will be in period dress, adding to the experience.
The Nevada Northern Railway Museum is making this opportunity available to encourage young adults to participate in an outstanding heritage railroading activity. Steve Crise and Mike Massee, two professional photographers, will mentor the winners. This is an outstanding opportunity to participate and learn about photograph and heritage railroading. The photo shoots will be held February 8-10 and February 15-17 2019.
