Chris Date: 12/10/18 10:55 Re: 12-09-18 Xmas Train = Forward & Backwards Author: HotWater Very nice! Do the crews deliberately lift the safety valve whenever they see you with camera?
Date: 12/10/18 12:26 Re: 12-09-18 Xmas Train = Forward & Backwards Author: mcdeo Got a chuggle out of the safety value statement. That would be neat if you could for a pic. But it's all done automatically on pressure. And to get there, need to shovel coal pretty well for several minutes before to get too much steam.

Personally I like all the sounds a steam engine makes. Roger Hogan Chama, NM Train Stuff Date: 12/10/18 17:22 Re: 12-09-18 Xmas Train = Forward & Backwards Author: HotWater Wacky-roger1942 Wrote:

Well since you never have worked on real steam locomotives, the lifting of the safety valve/valves is NOT a good thing, and the noise is generally pretty annoying to the cab crew. At least in my experience. Date: 12/10/18 18:10 Re: 12-09-18 Xmas Train = Forward & Backwards Author: Wacky-roger1942 HotWater Wrote:

The difference between a "relief valve" and a "safety valve" is that the relief valve opens and seats at the same pressure. A safety valve lifts at a set pressure, but doesn't reseat until the pressure has been reduced to a lower value. So to “lift safeties” on command, steam with the boiler pressure near the opening limit for the safety. When Roger is sighted, close the throttle momentarily to cause the boiler pressure to rise (same firing rate but reduced steam demand) and the safety will open. The engineer can open the throttle again but the safety will continue to blow steam until the boiler pressure is reduced to the reseating value giving Roger a show. Edited 1 time(s).
