UP Roundhouse Ogden 1969
Author: px320

I'm putting a photo album of my trip to Promontory in 1969. Can anyone tell me where this location is in Ogden, UT. There's nothing visible on Google Earth that I can see.

A buddy and I will be attending the NRHS convention this May.

Looks like an old turntable pit here.

Also this link is helpful. Along with the turntable I linked below the turntable outside the old roundhouse on the south end of the yard was still around

(type in Odgen UT in the search above the map and enjoy)

The Google image picture is the north end of the Ogden Yard, which was the SP locomotive servicing facility.   You can see a lot here.   The turntable pit is shown, as well as the footings for the diesel shop and the transfer table pit that is more toward the top of the picture and then, the heavy service building.  All of this is SP.

If you want to know where the UP roundhouse was, look at Google earth and you will see the new UTA Front Runner tracks that lead to the depot.  That track is a "fly over" and the new UTA track (basically) covers the location of the UP roundhouse and service area.   There is nothing left.   Not even the foundations, it is all gone.

Hope this helps,

Dunno if it's still available, but there is a book called "Ogden Rails" by Don Strack that contains an excellent map of the yards and facilities.  The map is dated April, 1969.

Here is a segment of a map of Ogden in 1969, showing the UP roundhouse and turntable, and the SP turntable.

Image 2 is today's Google image, from Google Earth.

Image 3 is from 1997, also from Google Earth.

And just for the fun of it, here is the same area in 1937.
